Some of these tools you may have or just improvise with whatever you have in your old garage, or you can shop for them or get them from friends and neighbours if you want so that you can keep down your budget as much as possible, which is very reasonable too. The basic tools you would need are; rust solvent, coarse sand paper wire brush, small paint brush, paint, alcohol, painter's tape, glazing putty, with these you can carry out car rust repair effectively on your own.

Car Rust Repair Steps

You would need to first carry out a good and regular inspection on your car for rust checking, when rust is still small and has not spread, you can handle it very easily and with just few and simple tools. Take this as a precautionary measure and do it regularly, so that you are not caught unawares, and because some rust can be taking place in a hidden part of your vehicle's body that may not b easily seen until you do some checking.

2. When you locate a rust spot, you will need to prepare that spot for the repair work you want to carry out. You will have to first remove the rust by rubbing the affected surface with alcohol or white spirit and coarse sandpaper or better still, a sturdy wire brush.

3. Do away with any other rust you can find on the surface or any loose paint, keeping scrapping until you get a very clean surface. Then treat the spot with a rust removing solvent and clean with rag. The reason is that, any bit of rust still left behind can still spread like virus and it will also not allow your repair work to be perfect.

4. Scrape round the affected area using a coarse sand paper, allow a wider range, until all the area around the rust spot are completely clean of rust and paint, because in a way very tiny rust might have started developing in them, and you have to stop this.

5. As you would need to apply putty in your work, you will have to tape off the unaffected areas to protect them when you are applying putty and paint.

6. Spread glazing putty on the affected areas to cover the rusted but cleansed surface and fill all the pits and scratches and make the surface to level off with other parts of the body. Do this evenly on the surface and allow it to dry.

7. Get the right colour matching that of your car manufacturer's from a paint chip or an identification plate under the car's hood, then with the sample, go to a car paint shop and buy the paint and the primer.

8. First paint with the primer or the underlay paint, then paint with the real colour for the body, after the primer has dried. Apply the painting two or three times, then allow it to dry so that you can polish and wax the affected surface to finish.

With good and regular car rust repair, you can keep your vehicle's body well maintained for a long time without any major repair work done, and at very minimal cost.
